The department and “county clerk and recorders shall, upon receipt of an application, issue a certified copy” of a vital record (50-15-121(1)). “You may visit any local County Clerk & Recorder’s office in Montana to purchase a birth or death certificate, regardless of which Montana county the event occurred in.” (DPHHS) A long form is the exception: “If you require a Long Form birth certificate (often needed for dual citizenship or tribal enrollment), you cannot obtain this from just any county.” It comes from the state office in Helena or the Clerk & Recorder of the county of birth.
