Vehicle Registration & Titles in Sweetwater County, WY
Here's what to expect at the County Clerk β fees, what to bring, and where to go.
In Wyoming, vehicle titles are issued by the County Clerk β this office, under W.S. 31-2-103(d). Registration and license plates are a different office: the County Treasurer, under W.S. 31-2-204(a). The $15 above is the title fee only; registration fees and county vehicle tax are the Treasurer's and depend on the vehicle.
This trips people up. W.S. 31-2-103(d) says the County Clerk may not hand over the title until you show a receipt for sales or use tax (W.S. 39-15-107(b)), or a County Treasurer receipt noting that you are exempt. So on a purchase you normally pay the tax at the Treasurer, then collect the title from the Clerk, then go back to the Treasurer to register and get plates.
The properly assigned titlefrom the seller (or the manufacturer's certificate of origin for a new vehicle), a bill of sale, and your sales/use tax receipt. New residents bring the out-of-state title. A vehicle titled outside Wyoming β and any homemade, rebuilt, reconstructed or kit vehicle β also needs a VIN inspection certified by a Wyoming law enforcement officer or a licensed Wyoming dealer, delivered to the County Clerk (W.S. 31-2-103(a)(vi)).
