Register to Vote in Sheridan County, WY
Here's what to expect at the County Clerk and Recorder — fees, what to bring, and where to go.
W.S. 22-3-104(d): an applicant “may only register to vote in person or by mail”. Wyoming is one of the states with no online voter registration, so any site offering to register you online for Wyoming is not doing what it says. The Secretary of State publishes the form and the rules; the registration itself is taken by a registry agent.
Four places can register you, and they are all equally valid (W.S. 22-1-102(a)(xxviii), W.S. 22-3-104(h)):
- This County Clerk's office in Sheridan — and it is the office that supplies the registration forms to everybody else on this list (W.S. 22-3-103(a)).
- Your city clerk, if you live in an incorporated city or town — the statute names the county clerk and the city clerk in the same breath.
- At your polling place on election day, before an election judge. Wyoming has election-day registration, which most states do not.
Deadline: at least 14 days before the election to register in advance (W.S. 22-3-102(a)) — or simply register at the polls on the day.
What to bring. You will be asked for your full legal name, residence and postal address, date of birth, your Wyoming driver's license number (or a statement that you have none plus the last four digits of your Social Security number), and your party affiliation if any, and you will sign the registration oath in front of the registry agent (W.S. 22-3-103). You also need proof of United States citizenship— the statutory list at W.S. 22-1-102(a)(lvi) is a Wyoming driver's license or ID card, a tribal ID, a REAL ID-compliant license from another state, a US passport, a certificate of citizenship or naturalisation, a draft record or selective service card, a consular report of birth abroad, or an original or certified US birth certificate with an official seal. The first three count only if they carry no indication that you are not a citizen.
Two of the lists are set by rule, not by statute, so check them with the Secretary of State rather than taking a figure from anywhere else: the identification accepted for registration (W.S. 22-1-102(a)(xxxix)(A)) and the documents accepted as proof of residence(W.S. 22-1-102(a)(lv)) are both “specified by rule of the secretary of state”. If you have none of the residence documents, the statute lets you sign an attestation that you are a bona fide Wyoming resident, which the county clerk may then verify.
