$45to record a document — Garfield County's own published figure

In Utah, land records are kept by the County Recorder, which is a separate elected office from the County Clerk — so the office you want is Garfield County Recorder ↗, not the Clerk whose details appear below. What it costs to record is set by statute, not by your county: § 17-71-407(3)(a) says the recorder “shall charge and receive” the fees below, and § 17-63-707 — the section that lets a county set its officers' fees — expressly excludes “fees for the recorder described in Chapter 71”. A county may price only what the statute leaves out: copies of a record and the subscription service (§ 17-71-407(2), (7)).

  • $40 — Recording any instrument not otherwise provided for, other than bonds of public officers (§ 17-71-407(3)(a)(i))
  • $40 — Recording any instrument, including one under Title 70A (Uniform Commercial Code), not otherwise provided for (§ 17-71-407(3)(a)(ii)(A))
  • $2 — An instrument containing more than 10 descriptions — each additional description (§ 17-71-407(3)(a)(ii)(B))
  • $40 — Mining location notices and affidavits of labor affecting mining claims (§ 17-71-407(3)(a)(iii))
  • $2 — An affidavit or proof of labor with more than 10 mining claims — each additional claim (§ 17-71-407(3)(a)(iv))
  • $5 — Redacting personal information under § 17-71-406 (§ 17-71-407(3)(a)(v))
  • $50 — Recording any plat — per sheet, plus $2 for each lot or unit designation (§ 17-71-407(3)(a)(vi))
  • $40 — Recording any license issued by the Division of Professional Licensing (§ 17-71-407(3)(a)(vii))
  • $40 — Recording a federal tax lien, and recording its discharge (§ 17-71-407(3)(a)(viii)–(ix))
  • free — Recording the mining rules of a mining district (§ 17-71-407(4)(a))
  • $5 — Certificate under seal, where the county has set no ordinance (§ 17-71-407(5)(a))
  • $5 — Taking and certifying acknowledgments including seal, where the county has set no ordinance — $5 for one name, $2 each additional (§ 17-71-407(5)(b))

Most counties add $5, and this page will not guess whether yours does. § 17-71-407(3)(b) — added whole by H.B. 38 of the 2026 General Session and in force since 6 May 2026 — has a county of the second through sixth class charge an extra $5 on each fee above, apart from the $2 per additional description or mining claim, “unless the county has a balance in the restricted account into which recording fees are deposited”. Both halves of that are beyond what this page can check. A county's class is not its population: § 17-60-105 has it stay as it is until the Lieutenant Governor issues a certificate, and only when population has risen past a limit. And the restricted-account balanceis a fact only that county's own accounts hold. Garfield County publishes $45 — "All Documents - $45.00". The county heads the schedule "Effective 05/4/2026"; the statute’s date is 6 May 2026. Read it on the county's own page ↗ One more thing readers get wrong: § 17-71-407(6) — a recorder may not charge more than one recording fee for each instrument, however many descriptive titles it bears or attachments it carries. Call the Recorder to confirm the exact fee before you go.
