“The register of deeds shall be the local registrar of vital records for each registration district in this state” (SDCL 34-25-4.1), and the Department of Health says to order “in person at the State Office, 221 West Capitol Avenue, Pierre, SD 57501, or any South Dakota Register of Deeds”. A certified death copy is $15.00 under the Department's rule (ARSD 44:09:06:02(2)).

Free for service members and veterans — certified death copies

South Dakota law says no charge may be madefor a certified copy of a birth, death or marriage record “to a serviceman in or a veteran of any war or conflict”, or to a member of their family, when it is needed for a claim (SDCL 34-25-54).
