Before using it, know the alternative: birth and death certificates can be obtained from the Register of Deeds in the county where the event happened, in most cases the same day. Ordering from the state instead costs $24.00 as a non-refundable search fee covering a three-year period, includes one copy only if the record is found, and can take up to four months plus postage. The Register of Deeds is a different county office from this one. Additional certified copies are capped at five per request.
