In California, a DBA is a Fictitious Business Name (FBN) statement filed with the County Clerk — this office — under B&P Code §§ 17900–17930. The fee varies by county (typically $26–$60; San Bernardino is confirmed at $55). You must file within 40 days of starting the business, in the county of your principal place of business.
After filing, you must publish the statement in an adjudicated newspaper in the county once a week for four consecutive weeks, starting within 45 days of filing. Then file the affidavit of publication with the County Clerk. Missing the deadline voids the filing — you have to start over and pay new fees.
An FBN statement is valid 5 years— renew before it expires. Refile within 40 days after any change (except a change to the owner's residence address). Corporations and LLCs need an FBN only if they operate under a name other than the exact name registered with the California Secretary of State.
